Abu Dhabi sets Guinness World Record as 64 nationalities carry massive UAE flag
Frontline healthcare workers and families lead coordinated 100-metre walk
ABU DHABI – Abu Dhabi witnessed a remarkable display of unity as hundreds of residents from 64 nationalities came together to set a new Guinness World Record for the most nationalities carrying a banner.
The record-breaking moment unfolded at Hudayriyat Island during the closing ceremony of the Burjeel Games, transforming a sporting finale into a powerful symbol of solidarity. Among the participants was a two-month-old baby, making the achievement both historic and deeply personal for many involved.
The attempt saw 153 participants carry an 85-metre UAE flag weighing over 200kg across a distance of 100 metres in a synchronised formation. Despite rainy conditions, the group successfully completed the challenge under strict Guinness World Records guidelines, surpassing the previous record of 58 nationalities set in Dubai in 2019.
Record feat
The banner, described as one of the largest ever carried in such a coordinated effort, required precision and unity. Each participant represented a unique nationality, reflecting the UAE’s diverse population. Officials on-site confirmed the success of the attempt, with the adjudicator declaring the participants “Officially Amazing” as the certificate was presented.
Scenes at the venue captured the celebratory atmosphere, with families, children and healthcare workers waving UAE flags and cheering. The presence of a two-month-old infant, Abu Bakr from Gambia, added a touching dimension to the occasion. His mother described the moment as one of pride, emphasising their deep connection to the country.
Unity march
The initiative was held under the theme “Our Nation. Our Heartbeat.” and brought together frontline healthcare workers alongside their families. Many of the participants had recently been engaged in demanding roles within the healthcare sector, making their participation in the event especially meaningful.
The effort was organised within 48 hours, inspired by a call from UAE leadership encouraging residents to raise the national flag as a symbol of unity. Across the country, homes, vehicles and public spaces have since been adorned with the UAE flag, reinforcing a shared sense of belonging.
A marching band from Abu Dhabi Police added to the occasion, while large screens displaying the UAE map and heartbeat graphics underscored the theme of national cohesion. The event followed a brief postponement of the Burjeel Games finale, which had originally been scheduled for February 28.
Shared spirit
Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and CEO of Burjeel Holdings, described the initiative as a reflection of the UAE’s strength in bringing together people from diverse backgrounds under a shared vision. He highlighted the resilience of both the nation and its healthcare workforce, noting their continued commitment to serving communities.
Participants echoed similar sentiments. Healthcare professionals spoke of how the event allowed them to step beyond their daily responsibilities and come together as members of a unified community. The diversity on display, they noted, mirrored their everyday working environment, now brought to life in a symbolic and visible way.
The Burjeel Games, which featured more than 2,500 participants, concluded following the record attempt with finals across various sports. While the sporting competitions marked the end of the event, the record-setting moment stood out as a defining highlight, reflecting the UAE’s multicultural identity and collective spirit.
