UAE midday outdoor work ban begins tomorrow with fines of up to Dh50,000
Employers must provide shade, hydration, and first aid kits at worksites
DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will enforce its annual midday work ban starting Saturday, prohibiting outdoor work under direct sunlight from 12:30pm to 3:00pm daily until September 15.
Now in its 21st year, the initiative aims to protect workers from heat-related risks during the country's hottest months.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) announced the regulation as part of its ongoing efforts to uphold occupational safety standards and preserve the well-being of labourers.
The ban applies across the public and private sectors, with heavy penalties for non-compliance. Companies found violating the rule will face fines of Dh5,000 per worker, up to a maximum of Dh50,000 if several employees are involved.
Midday work ban
Firms are required to provide shaded areas, fans, and ample drinking water at worksites. Hydration supplements, such as salts approved by authorities, must be made available, along with first-aid supplies. These measures aim to ensure worker comfort and safety during the restricted hours.
Exceptions allowed
Certain essential tasks are exempt from the ban, including technical work such as asphalt laying and concrete pouring, which cannot be delayed. Emergency services like water or electricity repairs, traffic management, and other urgent interventions are also excluded, provided the activities are approved by competent authorities.
Inspections and awareness
MoHRE will intensify inspection campaigns and awareness drives to ensure compliance. Inspection teams will visit work sites and accommodations, offering guidance on health and safety practices.
