Britain’s most famous explorers shares life lessons from risk, fear and recovery with global delegates
DUBAI – Bear Grylls, the world-renowned British adventurer, author and television personality, took centre stage in Dubai this week with a powerful message about courage, leadership and turning failure into lasting success.
Speaking to a packed audience at the Dubai International Project Management Forum, Grylls delivered a session titled Into the Unknown… Leadership Under Pressure, offering a rare insight into how life on the edge has shaped his outlook on leadership and personal growth.
Moderated by media professional Laura Buckwell, the dialogue drew heavily on Grylls’ extraordinary career, from extreme expeditions to bestselling books that have reached more than 20 million readers worldwide. He told delegates that fear, when managed correctly, can be one of the greatest motivators for achievement, pushing people to discover strengths they never realised they had.
Throughout his address, Grylls stressed that self-belief is the key to transforming failure into a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block. He said that true leadership is not about avoiding hardship but about meeting it head-on and finding opportunity within difficulty, a theme that resonated strongly with project managers, executives and policymakers attending the forum from across the globe.
Leadership under pressure
Drawing from his own experiences, Grylls revealed that he has survived around 20 serious accidents during his career of exploration and travel. Each incident, he explained, reinforced the importance of resilience and emotional control when the stakes are high. Whether facing a physical challenge in the wild or a professional crisis in the boardroom, the principles remain the same: stay calm, assess the situation, and make decisions rooted in clarity rather than panic.
He described how leaders who can keep their emotions in check and think clearly under pressure are better equipped to guide teams through uncertainty. According to Grylls, the strongest leaders are those who turn setbacks into valuable lessons, using adversity to build character, confidence and insight that can be applied long after the crisis has passed.

Grylls also spoke warmly about his relationship with Dubai, saying he has visited the city several times and always found it inspiring. His session formed a key part of the first day of the 11th Dubai International Project Management Forum, which was inaugurated under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. The event was officially opened by Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai.
Held under the theme Bridging Communities, the forum brought together dignitaries, heads of public entities and senior executives from leading global companies. Sheikh Ahmed was welcomed at the venue in Madinat Jumeirah by Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, and Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary General of The Executive Council of Dubai.
A city on the move
As part of the opening ceremony, a striking mural titled A Century of Mobility in Dubai was unveiled, tracing the emirate’s transport evolution over 100 years. The artwork charts the journey from the era of the late Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, who laid the foundations for Dubai’s development, through to the period of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, during which major bridges, roads and landmarks such as Al Maktoum Bridge, Al Shindagha Tunnel and the World Trade Centre were built.
The mural also highlights Dubai’s transformation under His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who led the emirate into a new era of global competitiveness, innovation and integrated transport solutions, including the Dubai Metro, Tram and advanced traffic management systems.
Future-focused mobility was also showcased, reflecting His Highness Sheikh Hamdan’s vision for autonomous vehicles, air taxis and smart, sustainable transport powered by artificial intelligence and advanced technologies.
Beyond Grylls’ appearance, the forum featured a wide range of high-profile discussions, including a keynote by tennis legend and humanitarian Andre Agassi, who spoke about discipline, teamwork and his commitment to education through the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education. The event also highlighted major infrastructure and development projects, from the 22-million-square-foot Dubai Auto Market to the Emaar Properties iconic metro station, the world’s highest at 74 metres.
