Reckless driver caught, faces Dh50,000 fine after Dubai road antics
Authorities warn against behaviours threatening road safety and public lives
DUBAI – Police in Dubai have apprehended an Asian driver after he was caught carrying out a series of dangerous traffic violations that put motorists and road users at serious risk.
Traffic patrols confirmed the motorist was engaging in reckless driving practices, including weaving through traffic, making sudden high-speed swerves and overtaking vehicles from the road shoulder.
Authorities said the actions endangered not only the driver's life but also the safety of everyone sharing the road. The violations occurred in circumstances where split-second reactions are often crucial, particularly on major highways with fast-moving traffic.
Serious risks
Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said such actions rank among the most dangerous traffic offences due to the confusion and hazards they create for motorists.
He explained that reckless manoeuvres deprive other drivers of sufficient time to react or avoid a collision, increasing the likelihood of severe crashes. On high-speed roads, sudden swerving or abrupt loss of control can quickly escalate into vehicle overturns or major accidents resulting in serious injuries or fatalities.
Brigadier bin Suwaidan also highlighted the dangers of overtaking from the road shoulder, stressing that it remains a designated emergency lane for ambulances and civil defence vehicles.
“Misusing it can lead to sudden and serious accidents and puts the lives of road users at risk,” he said.
Legal action
Dubai Police confirmed that legal measures were immediately taken against the driver, including impounding the vehicle under Local Decree No. (30) of 2023. Under the law, motorists involved in such offences must pay a Dh50,000 fine to release an impounded vehicle.
Authorities said high-speed driving combined with dangerous behaviour sharply raises the risk of losing control, particularly during unsafe lane changes. Such actions may lead to skidding, collisions with other vehicles or impacts with roadside barriers.
Dubai Police also urged members of the public to cooperate with authorities and report dangerous driving through the Police Eye service or by contacting the “We Are All Police” service on 901.
