Dubai revamps driver training to include advanced vehicle safety systems
Over 250,000 learners benefit as RTA updates light vehicle training syllabus
DUBAI – Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has updated the driver training curriculum for applicants seeking a light vehicle driving licence, introducing new content focused on modern vehicle technologies equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
The revision is designed to reflect rapid developments in automotive safety systems used globally.
Officials said the move is intended to strengthen road safety awareness and improve driver behaviour across the emirate. It also supports efforts to reduce traffic accidents through better understanding of in-vehicle technologies.
ADAS
The updated curriculum introduces training on a wide range of advanced systems now common in modern vehicles. These include forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane support systems, parking assist systems for designated spaces, and night vision systems.
It also covers Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), along with both conventional and adaptive cruise control. The inclusion of these features aims to ensure learner drivers are familiar with real-time safety technologies that assist decision-making on the road.
Global alignment
Sultan Al Akraf, Director of Drivers Licensing at RTA, stated that the revised curriculum is aligned with internationally recognised standards set by CIECA. He explained that the initiative reflects RTA’s commitment to adopting global best practices in driver education and modern mobility training. The updated programme has been integrated into driving institutes across Dubai, including theoretical and practical sessions, driver handbooks, and awareness lectures provided to applicants.
The authority also confirmed that more than 250,000 trainees have benefited from the updated training curriculum in recent years. In addition, dedicated workshops have been conducted for driving institutes to ensure consistent delivery of content related to advanced driving systems. These sessions are tailored to match the specifications of training vehicles, enabling instructors to effectively guide learners in understanding the latest automotive technologies and safety features.
