DUBAI: Pakistan’s legendary ghazal maestro Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan is set to take the stage at Dubai Opera in his farewell concert, “Hearts in Harmony”, joined by his son Aamir Ghulam Ali and grandson Nazir Ghulam Ali.
This special performance on August 31 (Sunday), will unite three generations of the Patiala Gharana tradition, offering audiences an unforgettable evening of ghazal, Sufi and semi-classical music. Timeless pieces such as “Hungama Hai Kyun Barpa” and “Chupke Chupke” will be reinterpreted in a rare family collaboration that blends tradition with fresh interpretation.

Who is Ustad Ghulam Ali?
Born on 5 December 1940 in Kaleke, Sialkot district, Ustad Ghulam Ali trained under the Patiala Gharana, one of the most prominent schools of Hindustani classical music. His father recognised his natural talent early and arranged training under the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. After his ustad’s passing, he continued under Ustad Barkat Ali Khan, developing mastery in thumri, ghazal and semi-classical styles.
By the 1960s, Ghulam Ali emerged as a pioneer of ghazal singing infused with classical depth. Unlike many contemporaries, he wove intricate raagas, taans and sargam patterns into ghazals, offering intellectual rigour without losing lyrical beauty. His most beloved renditions include “Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi”, “Dil Mein Ek Leher Si Uthi Hai Abhi” and “Faasle Aise Bhi Honge”.
Internationally, Ustad Ghulam Ali has captivated audiences across Europe, North America and the Middle East. His concerts are known for combining music with literary appreciation, as he often pauses to explain the meaning of complex Urdu verses. Alongside Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh, he is recognised as one of the greatest exponents of modern ghazal singing.
Farewell Concert at Dubai Opera

What you need to know
The farewell concert takes place at Dubai Opera, an iconic venue that requires elegance in both performance and presentation. Guests are requested to avoid overly casual attire such as shorts or flip-flops. Children under six are not permitted, and those aged six and above must hold a ticket to enter.
Latecomers will not be admitted after the performance begins, with entry only possible during intermission if applicable. Mobile phones and cameras are strictly prohibited inside the auditorium. Food and drinks purchased outside are not allowed.
Getting there:
- By car: From Sheikh Zayed Road (E11), take the exit towards Financial Centre Road/D71, follow signs for Burj Khalifa/Downtown Dubai, then merge onto Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard. Dubai Opera will be on the right.
- By Metro: Take the Red Line and alight at Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Station. From there, walk around 10 minutes or take a short taxi ride.
- By taxi: A ride from downtown Dubai takes around 15–20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Tickets are sold under Dubai Opera’s terms and conditions and are valid only for the specified event date and time. They cannot be resold, altered or defaced.
