DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a pilot operation to clean traffic signals using drones, marking a new era in smart infrastructure maintenance in Dubai.

The initiative aims to enhance service quality, optimise resource efficiency, and maintain the highest levels of traffic safety across the Emirate.

By integrating advanced technology into operational processes, RTA seeks to minimise reliance on conventional heavy equipment while ensuring sustainable and effective maintenance.

Efficiency gains

The drone-based operation eliminates the need for manlifts during cleaning, reducing safety risks for personnel. Preliminary trials at the Marrakech Street-Rebat Street junction revealed that a single side of a traffic signal could be cleaned in just three to four minutes, cutting operational time by 25% to 50% compared with traditional methods.

Operational costs are estimated to decrease by up to 15%, with projections suggesting potential savings of 25% as drone technology advances.

Focus on sustainability

Using drones also aligns with Dubai’s sustainability objectives. The approach lowers fuel and water consumption and reduces emissions typically associated with conventional cleaning equipment.

By limiting heavy machinery deployment, the RTA is combining cost efficiency with environmentally responsible practices, demonstrating how innovation can support greener urban operations.

Next steps

Abdulla Ali Lootah, Director of Roads and Facilities Maintenance at the Traffic and Roads Agency, emphasised that the pilot operation will continue to assess drone efficiency and effectiveness.

The next phase will focus on refining cleaning methodologies while maintaining strict safety standards and minimising traffic disruption. These efforts are expected to strengthen the quality of operational processes and further enhance the performance and longevity of Dubai’s road infrastructure.
