Multi-billion-dirham projects target transport, housing and sustainability
DUBAI – Infrastructure development across the United Arab Emirates in 2026 is advancing at pace, with projects spanning energy, water, transport and urban planning.
Authorities across all seven emirates have launched initiatives aimed at improving efficiency, sustainability and long-term economic resilience. The scale and diversity of these developments reflect a coordinated national vision focused on enhancing quality of life and supporting population growth.
From large-scale energy investments in Abu Dhabi to urban expansion projects in Dubai and Sharjah, the country’s infrastructure landscape is being reshaped through strategic planning and high-value contracts.
Energy and water expansion
In the energy and water sector, the UAE has prioritised efficiency and sustainability through targeted upgrades to government facilities and major utility projects. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure launched the first phase of a programme to reduce energy and water consumption in public buildings, beginning with Abdullah bin Omran Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah.
The initiative will cover 60 government buildings with investments of Dh120 million, while a second phase is set to expand to 360 facilities at a cost of Dh1 billion in collaboration with private sector partners. The move is expected to significantly cut consumption while modernising infrastructure systems.
Meanwhile, the Emirates Water and Electricity Company has received multiple bids for the development of the 3.3-gigawatt Al Nouf 1 Independent Power Producer project. Located within Abu Dhabi’s Al Nouf energy complex, the facility is set to become the largest of its kind in the UAE, incorporating advanced generation technologies and low-carbon reverse osmosis desalination systems.
Further north, Ras Al Khaimah has signed a long-term wastewater treatment agreement involving Etihad Water and Electricity, TAQA Water Solutions and Saur International Water Services. The planned facility will process 60,000 cubic metres per day and is expected to serve nearly 300,000 residents once operational.
In Sharjah, the Electricity, Water and Gas Authority has expanded water supply capacity in Kalba from 6 million to 9 million gallons per day. The upgrade integrates desalination plants, transmission pipelines and distribution systems into a unified network designed to improve reliability and response times.
Urban and city upgrades
Urban development continues to gain momentum, particularly in Dubai, where multi-billion-dirham investments are reshaping key districts. Sewerage and stormwater drainage upgrades in Al Quoz Creative Zone are underway at a cost of Dh250 million, forming part of a broader Dh500 million infrastructure plan.
Dubai Municipality is also progressing with the Deira stormwater drainage project, now 36 per cent complete. Valued at Dh500 million, the project spans 13 areas over 4,700 hectares and includes 60 kilometres of drainage networks, with completion scheduled for the end of 2027.
The emirate has also awarded five contracts under the second phase of the Tasreef programme, a Dh2.5 billion initiative aimed at enhancing stormwater drainage capacity. Covering 30 key areas across 430 million square metres, the system is designed to serve an estimated population of 3 million by 2040.
Large-scale real estate and mixed-use developments are also progressing. Dubai Silicon Oasis is undergoing expansion worth Dh12.8 billion, while the Dubai International Financial Centre is set for a major extension, adding 17.7 million square feet of space with a total value of Dh100 billion. The Liwan Oasis eco-leisure project has also been launched, adding a sustainability-focused destination to the emirate’s urban portfolio.
In Sharjah, construction has begun on a new exhibition and conference venue for the Sharjah International Book Fair, with a project value of Dh500 million and a planned opening in 2027.
Transport and connectivity
Transport infrastructure remains a central focus, with projects aimed at improving mobility and supporting growing populations. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has installed 726 modern bus shelters and upgraded waiting areas for marine transport services, enhancing commuter experience across the network.
The authority is also developing three integrated truck rest areas with capacity for 490 heavy vehicles, designed to meet international safety standards. These facilities aim to support logistics operations and reduce road fatigue risks for drivers.
The second phase of the Hessa Street development project has also been awarded, covering 3 kilometres and including three major intersections. The project features bridges extending 8,835 metres and a 480-metre tunnel, and is expected to serve around 650,000 residents across 10 residential and development zones.
Elsewhere, Umm Al Qaiwain has completed the first phase of its internal roads network project, extending 30.74 kilometres. In Ajman, the Al Tallah Road development has been inaugurated, featuring an 800-metre bridge on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and a 1,100-metre bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road.
Ajman has also introduced the Masfout Gate project, aimed at improving connectivity in mountainous areas while enhancing public spaces through safe and integrated walking trails.
Economic zones and investment
Economic and industrial zones are also attracting fresh investment, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a regional business hub. Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi has secured five new industrial and logistics projects valued at Dh147 million, expected to create around 500 jobs.
Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone has marked the groundbreaking of a new storage facility spanning 5,839 square metres, with a projected capacity of 12,000 cubic metres. The development supports growing demand for logistics and warehousing services in the emirate.
