UAE nationals can now renew Emirates ID a full year before expiry
Citizens can combine passport and ID renewals in one transaction
DUBAI – The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has announced that UAE nationals can now renew their Emirates ID cards up to one year before their expiry date.
The new measure took effect on Tuesday, July 14, expanding the previous renewal window of six months. The initiative is designed to give citizens greater flexibility while streamlining access to essential government services through an enhanced digital ecosystem.
The decision forms part of the authority's wider strategy to introduce proactive and innovative digital services that improve quality of life, meet the changing expectations of citizens and strengthen the UAE's position in delivering customer-focused government services. By allowing earlier renewals, the ICP aims to help citizens manage official documentation more conveniently and efficiently.
Earlier renewal
The latest move complements an earlier ICP decision permitting UAE nationals to renew their passports up to one year before expiry. Where both documents expire around the same time, citizens can now renew their passport and Emirates ID through a single integrated transaction, reducing the time and effort required while increasing the number of people able to benefit from the combined service.

Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of ICP, said extending the Emirates ID renewal period from six months to one year reflects the UAE leadership's vision of delivering proactive government services. He said the initiative responds directly to citizens' expectations by providing greater flexibility, allowing them to complete transactions at a time that best suits their needs while improving customer satisfaction and overall quality of life.
Digital integration
Al Khaili also highlighted the UAE's global standing in identity card services, noting that the Emirates ID is recognised for its ease of issuance as well as its high standards of security, reliability and quality. He added that the card plays a central role in accessing government services through an integrated electronic network connecting public and private sector entities.
According to the ICP, the extended renewal period is expected to further strengthen the regional and international standing of the UAE's identity card system, positioning it as a model for efficient identity management and service delivery.
Service goals
The authority said the initiative also advances the objectives of the UAE's Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme by simplifying procedures, reducing duplication and improving integration across government services. It also supports the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies and aligns with ICP's vision of delivering fully integrated proactive services.
The authority added that the initiative marks another step in transforming service delivery from standalone transactions into integrated service bundles, while shifting government services from a reactive approach to a proactive model focused on anticipating customer needs.
