DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a new digital permit service allowing Dubai residents to install parking shades in designated residential parking spaces.
The move comes as part of wider efforts to improve quality of life during the emirate’s extreme summer months, while ensuring road safety and preserving Dubai’s urban and aesthetic standards.
The permit service is now live on RTA’s official website and is designed to simplify approvals by bringing all relevant authorities onto a single digital platform.
Who can apply
The permit applies exclusively to designated and properly reserved parking spaces within residential neighbourhoods.
Residents cannot install parking shades in shared, unmarked or unauthorised parking areas.
Applications must be processed through RTA-approved contracting companies, rather than directly by individuals.
Application process
Residents can apply online through RTA’s website using the unified digital portal. Once an approved contractor is selected, the contractor submits the application on behalf of the resident. The system then coordinates approvals from all relevant service entities, eliminating the need for multiple submissions or manual follow-ups.
RTA has confirmed that the platform was developed in response to feedback received through customer councils and field visits, particularly as vehicle ownership continues to rise across residential communities.
Technical requirements
According to Arif Shakri, Director of Right-of-Way at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, all parking shades must comply with strict technical and safety standards. Shades must not obstruct pedestrian movement, soft mobility routes or the smooth flow of traffic. They must also avoid blocking traffic signs or road furniture and must not interfere with underground utility lines located beneath pavements or parking areas.
Design and colour specifications approved by RTA must be followed to ensure visual consistency across neighbourhoods. Importantly, all parking shades must be temporary and removable. RTA or any service authority may request removal in cases involving development projects, maintenance work or emergency situations.
Compliance and responsibilities
RTA has urged owners of new residential units and those undertaking construction works to ensure right-of-way regulations are fully respected during installation. Contractors and residents are expected to verify compliance at every stage to avoid violations or removal notices.
The authority stressed that the aim of the service is to regulate parking shade installations in a way that balances resident comfort with public safety, infrastructure protection and Dubai’s urban character.
