India resumes tourist visas for Chinese citizens; here’s how to apply
Apply via centres in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou with valid documents
DUBAI: India is welcoming again Chinese tourists starting today, 24 July 2025, as the country resumes the issuance of tourist visas for Chinese citizens, marking the end of a five-year freeze due to diplomatic and pandemic-related tensions.
The Indian Embassy in Beijing confirmed the announcement this week, highlighting detailed application procedures and updated requirements.
The decision follows high-level diplomatic engagements between both nations, including a January 2025 visit to Beijing by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. It’s the first time since 2020 that tourist visas are being granted, as relations gradually thaw between the two Asian powers.
What led to visa ban?
India suspended all tourist visas in early 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak. While most international travel restrictions were lifted in stages, Chinese citizens remained excluded due to ongoing border disputes – particularly the Galwan Valley clash in June 2020.
The consequences were swift: Chinese apps were banned, direct flights halted, and investment policies tightened. China, on the other hand, delayed the return of over 22,000 Indian students. Tourist visa access remained a key sticking point until now.
Application process
Chinese travellers can apply for an Indian tourist visa by completing an online form, booking an appointment, and submitting documents in person at one of the Indian Visa Application Centres (IVACs) located in:
- Beijing
- Shanghai
- Guangzhou
How to apply
- Online Form: Fill out the tourist visa form on the official Indian visa website and print it.
- Appointment Booking: Schedule an appointment at your nearest IVAC.
- In-Person Submission: Visit the centre with the printed form and supporting documents.
Personal appearance is mandatory to allow biometric data capture and ensure document verification.
Documents required
Applicants must present the following:
- Valid passport (minimum six months validity)
- Completed and printed application form
- Copy of Chinese ID card (both sides)
- Recent photograph (as per specifications)
- Return or onward flight ticket
- Bank statement showing minimum RMB 100,000 or a guarantee certificate
- Signed travel itinerary
- Proof of sufficient funds (financial undertaking)
Processing generally takes around three working days, provided all documents are complete and accurate.

India’s move coincides with efforts to reset ties, including plans to resume the Mount Kailash pilgrimage route and restore direct flights between Delhi and Beijing. Earlier in 2025, China lifted all remaining entry restrictions for Indian travellers, and both governments have since signalled a shared interest in normalising people-to-people exchanges.
