DAMASCUS – Syria is preparing to introduce a new national currency starting 1st January 2026, a move described by the Central Bank as a pivotal milestone in the country’s economic journey.

The announcement was made by Governor Abdulkader Husarieh yesterday, underlining the government’s efforts to stabilise the financial system.

Under Decree No. 293 of 2025, the Central Bank has been authorised to determine the timelines and locations for the currency exchange. Husarieh assured the public that the procedure will be smooth and well-organised, with detailed explanations to be provided during a dedicated press conference.

Syria’s new currency

The new currency is intended to symbolise Syria’s financial sovereignty and mark a step towards economic stability and development. Husarieh emphasised that the reform reflects the country’s post-liberation progress and reinforces the partnership between the Central Bank and Syrian citizens.

Officials confirmed that further details on the exchange process and related financial measures will be shared publicly, ensuring transparency and fostering confidence in the new monetary system.
