Dubai: RTA transforms Business Bay with major road upgrades
New street conversions improve traffic capacity and reduce conflict points
DUBAI’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed three major traffic improvement projects in the Business Bay area, one of the city’s busiest mixed-use districts.
These upgrades are part of an ongoing strategy to modernise road infrastructure, reduce congestion, and improve overall traffic safety across the emirate.
The enhancements aim to streamline vehicle movement through a neighbourhood known for its dense mix of residential towers, commercial hubs, and service centres. Connecting key roads like Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, the upgraded locations now offer greater road capacity and smoother transit during peak hours.
Street conversion works
A key transformation involved the street parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road, which was previously a two-lane, two-way road. It has now been converted into a one-way dual carriageway, complete with revised signage and road markings. This change has eliminated multiple overlap points and doubled the street’s capacity.
Intersection storage lane
Another improvement focused on the intersection of Al Mustaqbal Street and Al Khaleej Al Tejari 1 Street, where a 100-metre-long storage lane was added to enhance right-turn capacity toward First Al Khail Street. This upgrade has boosted the turning capacity by 50 per cent, easing bottlenecks and reducing waiting times at the junction.
Bridge and service road expansion
Near the towers on Al Mustaqbal Street, the adjacent service road was reorganised, and an additional lane was added, increasing the road’s capacity by about 50 per cent. Additionally, the entry ramp to the bridge over the canal, heading toward First Al Khail Street, was widened from one lane to two – doubling its capacity and alleviating pressure during rush hour.
