UAE: Islamic New Year 2025 begins after moon sighting in Saudi Arabia
Friday, June 27, announced as paid holiday for public, private sectors
DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will observe the Islamic New Year 1447 AH with a one-day holiday on Friday, June 27, 2025, for both public and private sector employees.
The announcement followed confirmation from Saudi Arabia that the crescent moon of Muharram was sighted on the evening of Wednesday, June 25, signalling the end of Dhul Hijjah after 29 days.
Significance of Muharram
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, holds deep religious significance. It marks the Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Medina in 622 CE – the starting point of the Hijri calendar. Recognised as one of the four sacred months in Islam, Muharram encourages spiritual reflection, prayer, and acts of charity.
Although not celebrated on the same scale as Eid, Hijri New Year is observed across over 20 countries, including the UAE, Morocco, and Syria. The solemn nature of the day contrasts with other Islamic holidays, focusing more on introspection than festivity.
Long weekend for some
With the holiday falling on a Friday, UAE residents who enjoy Saturday-Sunday weekends will benefit from a three-day break, extending from June 27 to June 29. Regular working hours are set to resume on Monday, June 30.
The Islamic New Year holiday comes shortly after UAE residents enjoyed an extended break for Eid Al Adha earlier in June, offering another brief respite before the summer intensifies.
