DUBAI/ABU DHABI – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is experiencing a significant spell of unstable weather, marked by heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds and reduced visibility across multiple emirates.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology, this marks the final wave of a broader weather system affecting the country since March 25. Authorities across all emirates have intensified emergency responses, issuing advisories, deploying field teams and coordinating efforts to ensure public safety.

The ongoing instability is driven by a surface and upper-air low-pressure system moving across the UAE from west to east. Rain bands initially developed over western regions before spreading to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the northern emirates, eventually reaching eastern areas including Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.

Convective cloud activity has triggered periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and occasional hail. Authorities confirmed that cloud intensity peaked between 10:45am and 2:45pm on March 26, with eastern and southern regions facing the highest alert levels.

Temperatures have varied sharply, with a high of 35.6°C recorded in Al Dhafra and a low of 12°C at Jais Mountain. Rainfall totals have been significant, including 47.9mm in Al Tawiyen and over 30mm in multiple eastern locations.

Abu Dhabi experienced early rainfall from the advancing system, with authorities warning of continued instability, particularly in Al Dhafra and Liwa under orange alerts. Police urged motorists to reduce speed, maintain safe distances and avoid flooded valleys.

Dubai saw overcast skies, intermittent rain and water accumulation, particularly on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road near Al Qusais. Dubai Police issued multiple alerts, while Dubai Civil Defence activated a full-scale emergency response plan.

Sharjah reported some of the most severe impacts, including heavy rainfall, road closures and stalled vehicles. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street and Al Ezwah Street were temporarily closed due to flowing wadis. Sharjah Police urged residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

Ajman authorities confirmed full operational readiness, with patrols deployed around the clock to handle emergencies and maintain road safety.

Ras Al Khaimah witnessed dramatic weather activity, including flowing valleys and waterfalls in mountainous areas. Police warned residents to avoid wadis and reduce speed.

Fujairah and eastern regions remained under heightened alert due to convective cloud formation and intense rainfall.

Traffic situation

Weather conditions have significantly affected road networks across the UAE. Water accumulation, reduced visibility and flowing valleys led to multiple road closures and traffic advisories.

Dubai Police warned motorists about hazardous driving conditions, especially on highways connecting Dubai and Sharjah. Sharjah Municipality deployed 20 recovery vehicles to remove stalled cars and maintain traffic flow.

Authorities repeatedly emphasised safe driving practices:

  • Reduce speed
  • Maintain safe distance
  • Avoid sudden braking or lane changes
  • Do not drive through flooded areas

Public transport and aviation services have also been impacted.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority suspended bus services to Sharjah and Ajman from 7pm due to waterlogged roads. Coordination efforts are ongoing to resume services once conditions improve.

Airlines including Emirates, flydubai, Air Arabia and Etihad Airways issued advisories urging passengers to:

  • Check flight status before departure
  • Arrive early at airports
  • Update contact details for notifications

Sharjah Airport issued similar guidance, warning of potential delays.

Authorities across the UAE activated comprehensive emergency plans to manage the situation.

Sharjah Charity International prepared shelters, food supplies and medical teams in case evacuations become necessary. Coordination with local authorities ensures readiness for worst-case scenarios.

Ajman Police confirmed full mobilisation of resources, with patrols operating 24/7.

Public safety

Authorities issued extensive safety guidelines covering multiple aspects of daily life.

Residents were advised to:

  • Stay indoors unless necessary
  • Avoid beaches, valleys and open areas
  • Secure doors, windows and loose outdoor items
  • Keep children and pets indoors
  • Avoid walking near trees and utility poles

Delivery riders were specifically instructed to suspend operations during severe weather due to high accident risks.

Health advisory

Public health authorities highlighted risks linked to stagnant water following rainfall.

Residents were urged to:

  • Remove standing water
  • Clean drainage systems
  • Use mosquito repellents
  • Maintain hygiene in outdoor areas

These measures aim to prevent mosquito breeding and related health risks.

Sea conditions

Marine conditions remain rough across both the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Authorities warned against sea activities due to strong winds and high waves.

Fishermen and boat operators were advised to remain cautious and monitor official updates.

Looking ahead

The National Centre of Meteorology indicated that the current system will gradually weaken, with conditions expected to stabilise after March 28. However, winds may strengthen and raise dust, reducing visibility in exposed areas.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, maintaining high readiness levels across the country.
