Dangerous animals are cared for safely after handover
DUBAI – Dubai Police recently received a serval cat after a resident chose to hand it over through the Safe Hand initiative.
The individual recognised that keeping wild or dangerous animals at home can endanger both humans and the environment, and may also lead to legal consequences.
Once received, the serval cat was transferred to Dubai Municipality for health checks and proper care. The initiative ensures that such animals are handled safely while following all environmental and legal procedures.
Preventing legal issues
Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Khalifa Al Mazina Al Muhairi, Head of the Environmental and Heritage Crimes Control Section, explained that the initiative educates the public about the risks of owning dangerous animals without a licence.
By voluntarily handing over the serval, the resident avoided penalties under Federal Law No. (22) of 2016 regulating dangerous animals.
Animals cared for safely
Adel Abdullah Al Karrani, Director of Public Health Services at Dubai Municipality, said the serval cat has been moved to a specialised centre. Its health will be checked, and it will receive care according to animal welfare standards and environmental regulations.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Muhairi praised the resident’s responsible action, highlighting the effectiveness of awareness campaigns in promoting understanding of wildlife laws. Safe Hand offers a confidential and safe method for the public to return dangerous animals voluntarily, supporting both human safety and wildlife protection.
