Abu Dhabi confirms opening date for world-famous Guggenheim museum
Frank Gehry-designed venue features 30 galleries and vast exhibition spaces
ABU DHABI – Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open its doors on 11th December 2026, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announced, marking a major addition to the emirate's growing cultural landscape.
The museum is expected to strengthen Abu Dhabi's position as one of the world's leading destinations for arts and culture while expanding the global network of Guggenheim museums.
Dedicated to modern and contemporary art, the museum has been developed as a platform for artistic dialogue, cultural exchange and creative exploration. It will present works from the 1960s to the present, highlighting artists from around the world while reflecting the stories and artistic identity of the United Arab Emirates.
The opening also represents another milestone for Saadiyat Cultural District, which continues to evolve into one of the world's most significant concentrations of museums and cultural institutions.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi joins a growing collection of landmark institutions within Saadiyat Cultural District, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.
Part of the internationally renowned Guggenheim family of museums alongside locations in New York, Venice and Bilbao, the Abu Dhabi museum has been designed with its own distinct identity. Its vision is rooted in the UAE while embracing a global perspective shaped by the region's historic role as a crossroads of civilisations, trade and cultural exchange.
The museum has been conceived as a place where visitors from different backgrounds can engage with artistic ideas, discover diverse perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of modern and contemporary art. It also aims to inspire younger generations by encouraging curiosity, creativity and lifelong engagement with artistic expression.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, described the museum as a defining moment in the emirate's cultural journey, saying it reflects Abu Dhabi's longstanding belief that culture serves as a bridge between people and helps build forward-looking societies.
He said the museum will bring new perspectives to modern and contemporary art by highlighting artistic voices from across the world while creating opportunities for learning, creativity and cultural exchange for future generations.
Global collection
Dr Mariët Westermann, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, said the foundation was proud of its longstanding partnership with DCT Abu Dhabi in creating a museum with an ambitious vision and international scope.
She said the museum's collection is both deeply connected to the region and global in outlook, featuring works from every continent. Through its exhibitions and programmes, the museum aims to become a place of discovery, curiosity and meaningful connections for visitors from the UAE and abroad.
The institution has been envisioned as a platform where different artistic traditions, generations and cultures come together. Rather than following a conventional chronological presentation, exhibitions will explore relationships between ideas, places and artistic practices.
