Soulful Rooh-E-Noor Band led by Rahman’s daughter dazzles Abu Dhabi crowd
ABU DHABI – The UAE’s National Day festivities began in spectacular fashion at the Sheikh Zayed Festival in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi, as Oscar and Grammy-winning composer AR Rahman unveiled his much-anticipated anthem Jamal – Song of Hope.
Conceptualised by Burjeel Holdings, the tribute was presented before a packed audience who erupted in applause as Rahman stepped onto the stage. He described the track as a song created especially for the UAE, capturing its spirit of unity, opportunity and beauty.
Musical tribute
In a rare honour for an Indian artist, the world premiere was followed by a breathtaking fireworks display synchronised to Rahman’s Academy Award–winning track Jai Ho, electrifying the audience at one of the nation’s largest cultural events.
Spectators witnessed dazzling bursts of light choreographed to the iconic beats, blending music and national pride in sublime harmony.
AR Rahman’s daughter takes the stage
One of the evening’s surprise highlights was a captivating performance by the all-women Rooh-E-Noor Band, led by Rahman’s daughter Khatija. Talented musicians from Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory delivered touching piano pieces alongside kathak dancers, elevating the cultural showcase. Lebanese-American singer-songwriter Mayssa Karaa added to the magic with soulful performances, including a moving rendition of the UAE national anthem.
Jamal Al Etihad
The event was attended by Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings, alongside senior community leaders. Rahman revealed that the idea for Jamal Al Etihad originated in 2023, inspired by the diversity and collective effort of individuals from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines and beyond. “People working in the heat, building skyscrapers, and shaping something progressive is what inspired this song,” he said. He explained that Jamal means beautiful, and the song celebrates everyone.
Rahman disclosed that the track had been completed nearly two years ago but was delayed due to global geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in Gaza. “We wanted global conflicts to end,” he said, adding that now felt like a more settled time for a message of hope. The audience was also treated to Jamal Al Etihad, a special version highlighting the UAE’s heritage and culture.
The night concluded with a brief rendition of Tere Ishk Mein, as Rahman promised fans an unforgettable show at Etihad Arena on January 23, 2026. Jamal will be available on AR Rahman’s official platforms.
