UAE suspends drone, glider and recreational aircraft flights for one week

ABU DHABI – The General Civil Aviation Authority has announced an immediate suspension of all flight permits for gliders, unmanned aerial vehicles and recreational aircraft across the UAE.
The directive, issued in Abu Dhabi on Saturday night, will remain in force for one week.
Authorities said the move is aimed at safeguarding public safety and protecting national airspace amid prevailing circumstances.
The suspension applies to all categories of gliders, drones and recreational aircraft, regardless of type. The measure takes effect immediately.
Immediate suspension
Under the directive, the operation, launch or flight of the specified aircraft is strictly prohibited for the duration of the suspension. This includes privately operated drones as well as recreational flying devices covered under existing permit systems.
The regulator stated that the decision was taken in light of current conditions and as a precautionary step to ensure safety and airspace security.
Safety measures
Officials stressed that the temporary halt is designed to reinforce protective measures within national airspace. No exemptions were outlined in the announcement, and all previously issued flight permits falling under the specified categories are considered suspended during this period.
The authority did not provide additional operational details but made clear that the directive applies nationwide.
Review period
The aviation regulator confirmed it will assess the situation at the end of the one-week period. Based on developments, it will determine whether to resume permitted activities or extend the suspension further.
