UAE summer travel: Airfares to top destinations drop below Dh1,000
Last-minute travel options under Dh2,000 available this July and August
DUBAI: For the first time in years, summer travel from the UAE is looking surprisingly affordable – even for spontaneous travellers.
With ticket prices to some of the most sought-after global destinations dropping significantly, a last-minute getaway in July or August no longer needs to break the bank.
Budget-conscious UAE travellers can now book connecting flights from Dubai to London for as low as Dh1,300, a steep drop from last year’s average of Dh2,500. Fares from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai are even more affordable, with tickets going for just Dh708 for travel between July 15 and 31. Compared to the soaring airfare prices in 2022 and 2023, these rates mark a significant shift in the summer travel market.
Lowest in years
Airfares from Dubai and Abu Dhabi are now among the lowest recorded since the pandemic-hit summer of 2020. Although some European destinations still demand higher rates – up to Dh3,800 for a direct last-minute ticket – many others, particularly those serviced by budget airlines, are far more accessible.
From Dubai, travellers can find deals like Dh1,300 to Tbilisi on flydubai, Dh653 to Istanbul via AJet, and Dh538 to Chisinau, Moldova, with Wizz Air Abu Dhabi. Flights to Cairo are priced at Dh1,430 with Air Arabia Express, while even a direct flight to New York with United Airlines can be booked for Dh2,945. Emirates is offering direct flights to Bangkok for Dh3,763.
Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi travellers have options such as Dh618 to Yerevan, Dh415 to Manama, Dh485 to Muscat, and Dh1,006 to Istanbul, all on Etihad. Athens is accessible at Dh1,635. Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah are not lagging behind either, with flights to Istanbul from both emirates hovering around Dh653 to Dh706.
Destination demand shifts
Istanbul continues to be a top destination, reflecting its blend of culture, business, and tourism appeal. However, changing travel habits among UAE residents are also contributing to the drop in prices.
Many travellers are now opting for shorter vacations – typically a week to ten days – instead of long annual breaks. This behaviour shift is especially noticeable among couples and single professionals, who now schedule multiple short trips throughout the year rather than a single extended one.
Destinations closer to the UAE such as Azerbaijan, Schengen zone countries, and even African locations are gaining popularity as residents diversify their travel plans. In addition, many corporate workers prefer to split their twenty-day leave across the year, with the first stretch wrapping up before early August.
Summer travel trends
Another key factor driving lower airfares is the reduced duration of stays abroad. Rather than travelling for one or two months, many UAE residents are taking trips lasting just ten to fifteen days. Upon return, they often book another short holiday, allowing them to travel more frequently without long absences from home or work.
This evolving trend has encouraged airlines to adjust pricing, particularly for mid-summer dates in July and August when schools are closed and demand typically spikes. Thanks to increased capacity, more direct and connecting options, and a highly competitive market, travellers are now spoilt for choice.
