Sharjah flights restart gradually after weather disruption across UAE airspace
Dense fog and strong winds disrupted early morning operations
DUBAI – Sharjah Airport has announced the gradual resumption of flight operations after severe weather conditions disrupted services across the United Arab Emirates (UAE), causing cancellations, diversions and schedule reshuffles.
Airport authorities said conditions improved this morning, allowing movements to restart in phases. Some delays are still expected as airlines work through backlog and aircraft repositioning.
Dense fog combined with periods of strong winds affected visibility and airside safety, prompting precautionary operational changes. Officials stressed that all decisions were taken in line with approved aviation safety standards and in coordination with airlines and air traffic control.
Sharjah flights
According to Sharjah Airport, six flights were cancelled during the disruption window, while 21 others were diverted or rescheduled to alternative airports. The measures were described as necessary to protect passengers and flight crews amid rapidly changing weather patterns.
The National Centre of Meteorology issued red alerts covering parts of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman due to fog formation and low visibility. Road traffic across several emirates also slowed as mist reduced sight distance during early hours. Forecasts indicated low cloud in eastern areas, with humidity rising overnight and into the following morning.
Schedule reset
Airport operations teams said they are continuing to manage knock-on effects by reorganising departure and arrival slots and supporting airline recovery plans. Passengers have been advised to check flight status through the airport website, airline mobile applications or by contacting their carriers directly, as further timing adjustments remain possible.
Weather bulletins show temperatures ranging between 30 and 32°C in coastal and internal areas, and 17 to 22°C in mountainous regions. Winds may reach 30 to 35 km/h at times, with slight sea conditions expected in the Arabian Gulf and Oman Sea. High humidity levels are forecast to persist, increasing the likelihood of further fog or mist during early morning periods.
Dubai disruptions
Dubai Airports also reported weather-related disruption at Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central. A total of 35 flights were affected, including 12 cancellations and 23 inbound diversions, as fog and mist reduced visibility.
Authorities said they are working with airlines and service partners to reduce delays and restore normal schedules.
