Abu Dhabi launches first dedicated licence plates for self-driving vehicles
Blue plates distinguish commercial and testing autonomous transport
ABU DHABI – Abu Dhabi has introduced the emirate’s first dedicated licence plates for autonomous vehicles, marking another step in its drive to expand smart mobility and future transport systems.
The initiative has been launched by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council. It is designed to regulate the operation of self-driving vehicles while making them easily identifiable on public roads.
The specialised plates will be used for both autonomous vehicles operating in commercial services and those taking part in testing and pilot programmes. Officials say the move will support safer operations while strengthening oversight as autonomous transport continues to expand across the emirate.
Two categories
The newly introduced licence plates have been divided into two distinct categories. Vehicles providing commercial autonomous services will carry plates displaying the phrase 'Auto Drive', while those participating in testing and pilot programmes will feature the word 'Test'.
Both categories share a distinctive blue design, allowing autonomous vehicles to be quickly recognised by road users and enforcement authorities. The visual distinction is expected to improve monitoring while supporting the safe integration of self-driving technology into the transport network.
Focus on safety
According to Abu Dhabi Mobility, the dedicated plates will enable relevant authorities to identify different types of autonomous vehicles more efficiently while they are operating on public roads. This is expected to enhance field monitoring and contribute to improved road safety as more autonomous vehicles begin operating across the emirate.
The plates are also directly linked to the licensing and operational requirements governing autonomous vehicles. Operating companies will be required to comply with the technical and operational standards approved in Abu Dhabi, ensuring that commercial services and testing activities meet the emirate's regulatory requirements.
