Ramadan 2026: UAE rulers grant pardons to thousands of prisoners
Financial obligations of inmates to be settled alongside humanitarian gesture
DUBAI – The holy month of Ramadan began across the United Arab Emirates today, bringing communities together for fasting, prayers, and reflection.
To mark the occasion, rulers across the UAE have granted pardons to thousands of inmates, providing opportunities for released prisoners to reunite with their families and start afresh.
Abu Dhabi
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, has ordered the release of 1,440 inmates from correctional institutions nationwide. In addition to the pardons, the UAE President will settle any financial obligations arising from the prisoners’ sentences. The initiative aims to ease family hardships, support societal reintegration, and provide comfort during the holy month.
Dubai
In Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has pardoned 1,856 prisoners of various nationalities. Chancellor Essam Issa Al-Humaidan,
Attorney General of Dubai, said the decision reflects the Ruler’s dedication to bringing happiness to families and enabling prisoners to begin a new life. Dubai Public Prosecution and Dubai Police have started legal procedures to implement the order.
Sharjah
His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has pardoned 738 inmates from Sharjah’s correctional institutions due to their good behaviour. The gesture allows prisoners to reintegrate into society while providing relief and joy to their families during Ramadan.
Ajman
His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, has ordered the release of 134 inmates from correctional facilities. Major General Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of Ajman Police, confirmed that legal procedures for the release have commenced immediately. The initiative gives prisoners a chance to reunite with families and start anew.
Ras Al Khaimah
His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, has pardoned 407 inmates and pledged to settle their financial obligations. Crown Prince His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi directed authorities to proceed with the necessary legal procedures. Officials emphasised that the gesture aims to support societal reintegration and bring happiness to families.
Fujairah
His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, has ordered the release of 125 prisoners from correctional institutions due to their good conduct. Major-General Mohammed bin Ghanim Al Kaabi, Commander-in-Chief of Fujairah Police, thanked the Ruler, highlighting that the pardons provide opportunities for released inmates to contribute positively to their communities.
