World’s largest and greenest vehicle carrier makes first call at Jebel Ali
DP World welcomes Höegh Sunrise, a zero-carbon ready vessel
DUBAI – DP World has welcomed the world’s largest and most environmentally advanced vehicle carrier, the MV Höegh Sunrise, on its first call at Jebel Ali Port.
The Aurora-class vessel is the first in the automotive shipping sector built with a zero-carbon ready design, capable of running on future fuels such as ammonia and methanol.
With a carrying capacity of 9,100 cars, the ship reduces carbon emissions per vehicle transported by 58% compared with industry standards. The Höegh Sunrise made its maiden voyage to Dubai from Europe, delivering 1,200 vehicles. A plaque ceremony at Jebel Ali marked the occasion, attended by senior executives from DP World and Höegh Autoliners.
Industry milestone
Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director, DP World GCC, highlighted the significance of the vessel’s arrival, noting its role in strengthening Dubai’s position as a global automotive hub. He emphasised that handling the largest and most advanced carriers supports greener supply chains while enabling more than 940 automotive companies in Jafza.
Höegh Autoliners CEO Andreas Enger said the Aurora-class design accelerates the transition to sustainable shipping, stressing that working with hubs like Jebel Ali ensures customers can move cargo reliably with a reduced carbon footprint.
Expanding capacity
In 2024, DP World handled a record 1.3 million vehicles in Dubai, a 53.6% rise from the previous year. To meet the surging demand, the port launched a new 2.6 million square foot vehicle storage yard at Terminal 4 in August and is currently developing the world’s largest auto market, covering 20 million square feet.
