Fireworks dazzle Auckland despite rainy weather conditions
DUBAI – Auckland has welcomed 2026 with a stunning fireworks display launched from New Zealand’s tallest structure, the Sky Tower, making it the first major city in the world to celebrate the New Year.
Despite rain dampening the celebrations, the city lit up with spectacular colours as residents and visitors gathered to mark the occasion.
South Pacific nations were the first to bid farewell to 2025. In Auckland, home to 1.7 million people, clocks struck midnight 18 hours before the famous ball drop in New York’s Times Square.
Meanwhile, an atoll in the remote Pacific nation of Kiribati became the very first place in the world to enter 2026.
Global NYE preparations
Next on the calendar, Australia’s Sydney Opera House is set to light up the sky with fireworks at 13:00 GMT. Across Asia, countries including Japan and South Korea held traditional ceremonies to mark the arrival of 2026.
In Europe and the Middle East, celebrations occur later, while the United States prepares for the iconic Times Square festivities.
