10,000 butterflies set to arrive in Abu Dhabi first immersive sanctuary
Tropical domes will house exotic species from Asia and the Americas
Abu Dhabi is preparing to welcome a dazzling new attraction this September – its first immersive butterfly sanctuary.
The Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi will open beside the National Aquarium at Al Qana, bringing with it more than 10,000 butterflies in a fully climate-controlled environment.
The indoor reserve is designed as a walk-through tropical paradise where visitors will be able to experience ecosystems from Asia and the Americas. The aim is not just to create a visual spectacle, but to promote environmental education and spark curiosity about biodiversity. Paul Hamilton, General Manager of the Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi, said the new facility will serve as both an attraction and a conservation-focused reserve.
“With the Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi, our primary objective is to create an environment that mirrors natural butterfly habitats,” Hamilton noted. “We want to inspire visitors to engage with nature on a deeper level.”
Asia and Americas zones
The gardens will be divided into two themed zones, each highlighting wildlife from a different continent. The Asia zone will be home to species like koi carp, bearcats, parakeets and a variety of regional insects. Visitors can expect to see butterflies flitting around in a rainforest-like setting.
In the Americas dome, the atmosphere will be just as vibrant, with two-toed sloths, caiman crocodiles, and other native insects sharing space with thousands of butterflies. Each dome is designed to mimic the temperature, vegetation, and conditions of real tropical habitats.
Immersive experience awaits
With photo-friendly surroundings and rich biodiversity on display, the Butterfly Gardens promise to be an unforgettable experience for families, students, and tourists. The attraction is set to serve as a hub for nature education and sustainability awareness, offering a peaceful yet engaging retreat from the city’s fast pace.
New era for eco-tourism
The upcoming opening follows a wave of nature- and culture-based developments in the capital. Earlier this year, teamLab Phenomena – a multi-sensory art experience – launched in the Saadiyat Cultural District. Now, the Butterfly Gardens will further enhance Abu Dhabi’s profile as a destination for eco-tourism and interactive learning.
Ticket details and visitor timings are expected to be announced closer to the opening date.
