Dubai to unveil new AI-powered traffic system connecting 620 intersections to vehicles
Real-time road data to appear on connected car dashboards
DUBAI – Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the launch of a pioneering smart traffic system that will connect traffic signals directly to vehicles, marking a major step in the emirate’s Smart Connected Vehicles project.
The Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) system will use artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin technology to relay real-time information from intersections to vehicle dashboards.
Set for deployment across about 620 signalised intersections between 2027 and 2028, it aims to transform traffic management, enhance safety, and ease congestion on Dubai’s roads.
What will change for drivers?
Under the system, drivers will see live updates on signal phases, remaining green or red light durations, and status at upcoming intersections directly on their dashboards. The network will also provide alerts on congestion, detours, accidents, and road closures. According to RTA officials, the platform’s goal is to eliminate the need for drivers to glance at mobile phones for traffic updates, thereby improving safety and preventing distractions.
To ensure inclusivity, RTA is working with global car manufacturers to integrate V2X connectivity in new vehicles. Owners of older models will still be able to access the system through external devices or CarPlay and Android Auto apps that display the same real-time data.
How will it work?
Engineer Salahuddin Al Marzooqi, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Department, said the V2X network will become a cornerstone of Dubai’s next-generation signal operations. The system will be fully integrated with the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre (DITSC), allowing it to use AI-driven analytics to optimise signal performance across the city. Built on digital twin principles, the platform will simulate traffic scenarios, test intersection designs, and forecast congestion before applying changes in real time.
In its future phases, the V2X project will expand to include vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, enabling cars to exchange information about slowdowns or obstacles ahead.
When will it be completed?
Dubai currently operates 620 signalised intersections, all set to be connected under the centralised V2X system. The smart infrastructure is expected to be ready within two years, followed by integration with carmakers and pilot testing ahead of the full launch between 2027 and 2028.
Once operational, the initiative will position Dubai among the world’s leading cities in intelligent traffic management – redefining how road networks communicate with vehicles and drivers alike.
