Emirati Women’s Day
The UAE will officially mark Emirati Women’s Day tomorrow (Thursday) under the theme “Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years”, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the General Women’s Union (GWU). The occasion highlights the sustained achievements of Emirati women across five decades, under the guidance of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the GWU, known as the “Mother of the Nation”.
Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Secretary-General of the GWU, emphasised that Emirati women have consistently proven their ability to contribute effectively to national development. The UAE ranked 13th globally and 1st regionally in the 2025 UNDP Gender Equality Index, with women now holding 50 percent of Federal National Council seats and 26 percent of ministerial positions.
Today, Emirati women represent 71 percent of nationals in both public and private sectors, 63 percent of leadership roles in the federal government, and 13 percent of ambassadors abroad. More than 25,000 businesswomen manage over 50,000 commercial licences, with combined investments exceeding Dh60 billion.
In education and technology, women account for 46 percent of STEM graduates and form 50 percent of the national workforce in the space sector. Their contributions are also reflected in the UAE’s international initiatives, including the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Women, Peace and Security initiative and the Sheikha Fatima Initiative to Empower Rural Women in Africa.
